Position Description:

Metallurgist – Failure Testing for Accu-Test Labs Ltd., Houston, TX.

The Metallurgist at Accu-Test Lab plays a crucial role in supporting production within our fast-paced metallurgical testing laboratory. The Metallurgist is responsible for a wide variety of metallurgical engineering functions, including but not limited to: Ensure productivity standards are met and develop production plans to deliver test reports that adhere to Accu-Test’s quality standards. Design test plans in coordination with customers to accommodate their needs and report findings accurately. Perform metallographic examinations, including macrostructure and microstructure analyses, grain-size determination, non-metallic inclusion ratings, ferrite point-counts, and phase analysis. Conduct micro-hardness testing, including mapping, weld procedure surveys, and effective case depth determination. Serve as a technical contact for customers, providing expert advice and support. Liaise effectively with colleagues, customers, and outside vendors. Utilize SEM for advanced material analysis and characterization. Perform detailed failure analysis on metallic materials and components to determine the root causes of failure. Utilize metallurgical techniques such as microscopy, spectroscopy, and other advanced analytical methods to examine failed components. Develop and implement testing protocols and procedures to assess material properties and failure mechanisms. Prepare comprehensive reports documenting findings, analysis, and recommendations for corrective actions. Communicate effectively with clients, vendors, and international stakeholders, ensuring clear and accurate dissemination of technical information.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering or related engineering field and 3 years progressive post-baccalaureate experience in materials testing, inspection and certification as a metallurgist or materials engineer.

Must have 3 years of experience working as a Metallurgist for manufacturing and energy sectors. Must have 3 years of experience with Ferrous Alloys including Steel (iron-carbon alloy) and Cast Iron and Non-Ferrous Alloys including Aluminum Alloys, Copper Alloys, Nickel Alloys, and Superalloys (cobalt-, nickel-, and iron-based).

Must have 2 years of experience with: Leading materials testing projects from start to finish; Providing technical guidance in specimen extraction, machining and processing, and subsequent mechanical and metallurgical testing and analysis; Preparing failure testing reports.
